“My ABS light came on after a tire or brake job”
A wheel speed sensor or its wiring can get bumped, stretched or disconnected during other work. We check that corner first, since it's often a simple fix.
ABS Warning Light Diagnosis · Victorville CA
When the amber ABS light comes on, your anti-lock brakes have turned themselves off. Your regular brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop. For ABS warning light diagnosis in Victorville, CA, our D Street shop at 17033 D St reads the stored codes and then tests the actual sensor, wiring or module before recommending a part. Call (760) 241-4253.
A code tells us which circuit reported a problem, not which part has failed. We test before replacing anything, explain the cause in plain words and give you a free written estimate. Repairs are backed by our 1-year warranty.
ABS is part of the complete braking system covered by our brake repair service. If the inspection also finds worn pads, rotors or a fluid problem, we'll tell you.
Your dashboard may show more than one brake-related light. The color and the symbol tell you how urgent it is. Your owner's manual has the exact meaning for your vehicle.
| Light | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Amber ABS | The anti-lock system has turned itself off because of a fault. Normal brakes still work. | Drive carefully, leave extra following room, and schedule a diagnosis soon. |
| Red BRAKE | Low brake fluid, a hydraulic problem, or the parking brake is on. | Check the parking brake. If it stays on, stop driving and call us. |
| Red BRAKE and amber ABS together | A problem that can affect brake balance as well as the anti-lock system. | Treat it as urgent. Have the vehicle inspected before normal driving. |
| Traction or stability light | Often shares sensors with ABS and may come on with it. | Have both systems checked together. |
A wheel speed sensor or its wiring can get bumped, stretched or disconnected during other work. We check that corner first, since it's often a simple fix.
An on-and-off light often means a sensor gap problem, a damaged tone ring or a wire that loses contact over bumps. We watch live data during a test drive to catch it.
Both systems use the same wheel speed signals, so one bad sensor can turn on both lights. One accurate repair usually turns off both.
The anti-lock system watches how fast each wheel is turning. When one wheel slows much faster than the others during hard braking, the system pulses the brake on that wheel so the tire keeps grip and you can still steer. When the module finds a fault in that system, it turns on the amber light and turns ABS off to be safe. Normal braking stays on, but you lose that protection in a panic stop or on a slick road.
The most common cause we find is a wheel speed sensor problem. The sensors sit near each wheel hub, where they face heat, dirt, water and stone hits. A sensor can fail inside, but its wiring and connector fail just as often. A cracked or rusted tone ring, the toothed ring the sensor reads, can also send a bad signal. Some vehicles build the tone ring into the wheel bearing, so a worn wheel bearing can set an ABS code too.
Other causes include low brake fluid, a blown fuse or relay, a weak battery or low charging voltage, and a fault in the ABS pump or module. Low voltage matters more than many people think. A tired battery can set ABS and stability codes that clear once the battery is replaced. That's why we check the basics before condemning an expensive module.
Replacing parts based only on the code number is the most common way drivers overspend on ABS repairs. A code that names the right front sensor may really be caused by a chafed wire near the strut or a loose connector. Testing resistance, signal output and wiring continuity tells us which part actually failed.
If the ABS pump or module is at fault, some vehicles need the new module programmed, and the brakes need a special bleed procedure run with the scan tool. We follow the maker's procedure so the system works correctly and no air is left in the pump.
The ABS light is not the same as the Check Engine light. A Check Engine scan won't read ABS codes on most vehicles, which is why some code readers show nothing even though the light is on. Our scan tools read the ABS module directly.
